Practice & Programs

What We Offer

JissoJi Zen Ann Arbor offers a range of practice opportunities rooted in traditional Sōtō Zen Buddhism. All programs are open to the public. No prior experience is required.

Sunday Sitting (Weekly)

Every Sunday at The Center for Sacred Living and via Zoom.

  • 10:00 am — Short sit and Dharma talk / Intro & Orientation / Soji
  • 11:00 am — Zazen (seated meditation)
  • 11:40 am — Chanting service, informal check-in, and lunch

Zazen is practiced in the style of shikantaza (“just sitting”). We welcome all bodies and all forms of sitting — cushion, chair, standing, or lying down.

To join via Zoom, email jissojizen@gmail.com with the subject “Request access to Zoom” at least 12 hours in advance.

Half-Day Retreats (Monthly)

One Saturday or Sunday per month we hold a half-day retreat (zazenkai) with extended periods of zazen, walking meditation (kinhin), and a Dharma talk. These are open to practitioners of all levels.

Introduction to Zazen

New to Zen meditation? Orientation and introduction to zazen and zendo (meditation hall) forms are available upon request. Contact us to schedule a personal introduction before or after a Sunday sitting.

Dharma Study

We engage in ongoing study of Buddhist texts, with particular attention to the writings of Dōgen Zenji (Shōbōgenzō) and Shunryū Suzuki Roshi (Zen Mind, Beginner’s MindNot Always So). Study opportunities include Dharma talks, question-and-answer periods, and periodic study groups.

Jukai — Lay Ordination Preparation

Members who have practiced regularly for approximately one year may request preparation for Jukai (lay ordination). This multi-month process includes:

  • Study of the Sixteen Bodhisattva Precepts
  • Sewing of a rakusu (a small ceremonial Buddhist robe)
  • A formal ceremony of receiving the precepts and a Dharma name

Jukai is a meaningful commitment but is not a requirement for participation in any other aspect of JissoJi’s community life.

Ceremonies and Observances

JissoJi observes traditional Sōtō Zen ceremonial forms throughout the year, including:

  • Full Moon ceremonies
  • Buddha’s Birthday (Hanamatsuri)
  • Bodhi Day (Buddha’s Enlightenment)
  • Parinirvana Day
  • Memorial services for the deceased
  • Shuso ceremony (head student recognition)

Chaplaincy Education

Through JissoJi and affiliated programs, Rev. Marta Dabis offers Introduction to Chaplaincy (ITC) coursework and supports candidates pursuing board certification through APC/BCCI. Contact us for more information.
